Today I had a photo pop up from the last time I was at a Mentorship Mastermind in VA. It reminded me that while I was there my buddy Dr. Lars dropped a truth bomb: the simple framework I taught him—coaching leverage—changed the way he works with clients. So here it is. The dirty little formula that runs my Flex Diet Cert, my Phys Flex Cert, and basically every coaching decision I make: Coaching leverage = Physiologic Effect ✕ Client Ability to Change Or, if you like tattoos and punchy soundbites: Physiology ✕ Psychology. This ends the stupid “what’s more important—mindset or physiology?” cage match. The answer is both!. Always both bro. Say your client is struggling with sleep. Option A: Some elaborate 17-step shaman biohack ritual complete with barefoot grounding at sunset, chanting kumbaya into a Himalayan singing bowl, tape your mouth, blast your nut sack with red light, then levitate in a cryochamber. Option B: Add one scoop of Killswitch hot cocoa into their nightly wind-down. Because here’s the math that matters: 0 ✕ anything = ZERO. Why This WorksThe beauty of coaching leverage is it gives you a compass.
This is why my interventions inside the Certs are ranked by leverage overall via the framework. The Meathead GospelSo next time you’re tempted to fall down a rabbit hole of $1,200 gadgets, fasting protocols that feel like prison sentences, or bro science TikToks that make your IQ drop… stop. Pull out the framework. Run the math. That’s coaching leverage, my friend. That’s how you stop wasting time and start stacking wins. Much love, metabolic carnage, and no red light where the sun don't shine, PS - Test out adding the Killswitch sleep supplement that is a tasty hot cocoa at night as part of your wind down routine. Note- I liked it so much I requested to be an affiliate for it. >> ON or OFF? << their "on switch" for the day is great too __________ Mike T Nelson CISSN, CSCS, MSME, PhD Mike T Nelson is a PhD and not a physician or registered dietitian. Your metabolism is not a tiny campfire hiding behind your pancreas. You cannot “stoke” it with lemon water, maple syrup and spicy peppers. Eating six miniature meals per day does not keep it roaring like a blast furnace at a steel mill. And no supplement is going to crank it up while you sit motionless on the couch watching videos about how to crank it up. Metabolism is much bigger than the number of calories you burn at rest. It is your body’s entire energy-management system. A flexible...
Huge thanks to everyone who got in on the Flexible Meathead Cardio, wahooo!! Super stoked for all of you! Today, Dr. Krista Scott-Dixon reveals the counseling techniques that most nutrition coaches have never learned — and why mastering them matters more than any protocol. She explains why over-optimized clients are often the most fragile, how AI is eroding the critical thinking skills coaches rely on, and what it really takes to translate complex science into simple, effective actions....
The internet has once again found a perfectly useful physiological metric... ...and turned it into a religious war fought by GooRoos with ring lights. One camp treats VO₂ max like the final boss of human health. Get it higher. Then higher again. Keep going until your Garmin grants immortality and your mitochondria begin speaking Latin. The other camp says VO₂ max is overhyped, badly measured, and mostly useless because many studies used estimated METs instead of strapping every subject into a...
