Met Flex, HRV and More

I recently jumped on Quinn Magnuson’s Effort Over Results Podcast for a conversation that went all over the map in the best possible way.

We started with how I went from mechanical engineering into exercise physiology… and somehow ended up talking about metabolic flexibility, HRV, cold exposure, creatine, peptides, women’s metabolism, and why the right music can make you lift heavier.

Which, honestly, is a pretty accurate snapshot of how my brain works.

My engineering background is a major reason I view the human body the way I do.

I don’t see “fitness tips” or trendy hacks. I see systems, inputs, outputs, feedback loops, and a few key levers that actually matter when you want better performance, recovery, and body comp.

In this episode, we dig into:

  • What metabolic flexibility actually is (and why most people misunderstand it)
  • Why HRV is one of the best windows into your nervous system and recovery
  • How to use cold exposure as a tool instead of a ritual
  • Why the search for the “perfect diet” usually misses the point
  • Why creatine is still one of the best supplements you can take
  • The realities of peptides, stem cells, and what the research actually says
  • Why women often have a very different metabolic experience than the advice they’re given
  • And yes… how music changes training intensity more than most people realize

This one blends nerd-level physiology with very practical coaching experience, which is always my favorite type of conversation.

Give it a listen and see which parts make you go, “Ohhh… that’s the lever I’ve been missing.”

Quick heads up: we talk quite a bit about nutrition in this episode — and I’ve got a ton more coming on that topic very soon.

The Flex Diet Cert opens this coming Monday, and I’ve got some pretty amazing fast-action bonus items lined up.

Stay tuned, and look for a newsletter Monday morning with all the details.

Much love,
Dr Mike

The other day I did with my brother from down under, Ben Mayfield-Smith, where I joined him on his podcast, Matter Athletica, to talk about what actually shapes muscle growth beyond just sets and reps. Most people understand the primary drivers of hypertrophy — mechanical tension, load, and progression. What they miss are the secondary and tertiary factors that determine whether those drivers can actually be accessed consistently over time. In this episode, Ben and I unpack how: Aerobic...

Carb cycling has been floating around the fitness world for decades. Some people treat it like a magic trick.Others think it’s unnecessary complexity. The truth, as usual, is somewhere in the middle. In this episode of the Flex Diet Podcast, I sat down with Jon Heck to talk through how carb cycling actually works in the real world, not as a diet gimmick, but as a practical tool for performance, recovery, and body composition when it’s applied correctly. We dig into timing, hydration,...
