Hola from the IAD airport where I had a an amazing time al the Mastermind meeting and more coming out on that, but today I sit down with Rick Alexander, M.A., PhD candidate — a former Special Operations combat medic who supported SEALs and Green Berets and we discuss how a single psychedelic experience completely redirected his career. That experience sent him back to school to study psychedelic chaplaincy and spiritual care, and today he's researching how these substances can heal (and sometimes destabilize) the people who use them. We dig into why military training narrows emotional range and makes re-entry into civilian life so hard, what neuroplastic windows might mean for athletes trying to learn new skills faster, and how a brutal 5-MeO-DMT trip actually changed Rick's running form and breathing. We also get into the deeper questions: what's really happening in DMT space, why "good trip/bad trip" is the wrong framework, and why you shouldn't be so quick to dismiss someone else's experience. Note- this is a bit off topic but we do discuss neuroplasticity and touch on some training ideas too Listen to the full episode here Episode Timestamps: 2:49 - Rick's PhD progress and the psychedelic experience that redirected his career If you prefer to watch the podcast, check it out below: Watch the episode on YouTube Much love, Dr. Mike ________ Mike T Nelson CISSN, CSCS, MSME, PhD Mike T Nelson is a PhD and not a physician or registered dietitian. Hola from the MSP airport, where your fav nerd is about to board the flying germ tube screaming toward Reston, VA to hang out with a bunch of other super nerds hosted by Coach Kav and Kane. Yesterday was my birthday, and I turned 52 years young. Which seems completely crazy. I was thinking about how I took my first Anatomy and Physiology class in 1992 — shout out to Dr. C at St. Scholastica. At the time, I had zero idea I would eventually spend my life working in a field directly related to...
I’ve talked about creatine on a LOT of podcasts this year, but this conversation with Paul Oneid went in some different directions. Paul is a strength coach who wants to know what the research actually means once you leave PubMed and have a real human standing in front of you. We covered: The origins of creatine How much creatine your muscles can actually store Why you do NOT need a loading phase Creatine and cognition Why creatinine can make your blood work look weird Creatine monohydrate...
Big milestone as we just reached episode 400 of the Flex Diet Podcast! I could not have done it without out, thank you! In this one I sit down with Dr. Dwayne Jackson, a PhD researcher in neurovascular physiology, exercise and human physiology, medicine, and nutritional biochemistry. We discuss why mitochondrial peptides such as MOTS-c and SS-31 may be promising tools, but cannot replace the aerobic base that makes their effects meaningful. We also dig into AMPK and mTOR signaling,...
