The Future of Coaching

Hola from Revelstoke Canada, eh.

The prediction is for mo' snow this Monday.

Legs a little smoked.

My buddy Trevor from Coach Catalyst just said he arrived so he is joining our crew for some food and to chat about coaching of course.

Our discussions are not typical as we rarely chat about workouts or macros, but instead actual coaching.

And it hit me:

The industry is quietly splitting in two.
On one side?

Coaches who understand systems.
Physiology.
Cost.
Leverage.

On the other?
Coaches refreshing dashboards like they’re me here frantically checking the weather multiple times a day.

HRV down 7 points?
“Cancel leg day Bro!"

Respiratory rate up 1 breath?
“Must be overtraining home-fry"

Readiness score yellow?
“Better meditate and hydrate like your life depends on”

Metrics are great, but each one has a limit too.

To help you out, here’s my golden rule of HRV:

It only tells you the status of your autonomic nervous system at the moment of measurement.

That’s it.

It’s not a diagnosis.
It’s not recovery.
It’s not fate.

It’s a snapshot.

And more importantly?

It’s one of the best tools we have to measure cost.

The cost of hard training.
The cost of flying in the sardine can at 30,000 feet.
The cost of too many dark coffee stouts.
The cost of counting sheep at night instead of shut eye.
The cost of being a stressed-out hooooman.

If you don’t understand cost…

You can’t intelligently apply stress.

And if you can’t apply stress intelligently…

You’re not programming adaptation.
You’re just reacting.

That’s one of the reasons I said yes when Kane and Trevor asked me to jump into
The Future of Coaching Virtual Summit (March 4th).

You’ve got:
Jason Phillips
Jordan Dugger
Kane
Trevor
Jared Hamilton
Will Matthiessen
Mike Rhees
And me

Eight operators.

This live event is free.

If you upgrade to VIP, I make a few clams.
If you don’t, I still want you there.

Much love from the mountains,
Dr Mike
PS - If you’ve ever panicked because HRV dipped after leg day… you’re exactly who this is for. Or in my case, less sleep, shredding the gnar, and elevation, hahaha

Another sunny, semi-windy day here in South Padre, where your favorite nerd was back out playing in the wind again. The best part? Even after getting my lifting and rowing done, I still had plenty of energy left to go kiteboarding. Wahoo. A big piece of that is just doing the basics with violent consistency, as you know. But the other part comes from the four pillars I teach in the Physiologic Flexibility Certification, which opens again this coming Monday: Temperature pH Expanded fuels...

Quick one before I head out to the water — wind is up and the kite is calling my name. Last Thursday I told you about the nootropic I accidentally took too many servings of at once. Ooops. Unlabeled sample bottle, assumed one serving, was emphatically not one serving, had one of the cleanest deep work sessions of my adult life and reported back to Tomer at Switch like a completely unrepentant human guinea pig. Since then, over 75% of the initial batch is already pre-ordered. Tomorrow the...

In this episode of the Flex Diet Podcast, I sit down with my good buddy Ari Whitten to talk all about red light therapy (photobiomodulation) and why it’s become so popular lately. We dig into how red and near-infrared light fits into an evolutionary sunlight context, why those wavelengths penetrate tissue differently, and how they can influence mitochondria, recovery, and performance. Ari also breaks down the confusing part most people miss: device choice and dosing aren’t one-size-fits-all,...
