Vinegar, guts, gainZ, and nonsense

Your gut is not a magical compost pile with Wi-Fi.

Despite what the microbiome prophets and probiotic carnival barkers keep screaming, gut health is not solved by sprinkling fermented fairy dust on your lunch.

Training matters.

Nutrition matters.

Stress matters.

Context matters.

In this episode of the Flex Diet Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Emily Dow, PhD, RD, to dig into the messy intersection of resistance training, nutrition, vinegar, glucose control, and gut health.

The Vinegar Rabbit Hole

Emily’s dissertation looked at a 12-week resistance training program combined with a vinegar intervention.

Main gut permeability outcomes?

Limited.

Yet the exploratory findings were the juicy nerd candy: possible strength improvements, potential cognitive benefits, and mechanistic pathways involving acetate metabolism, NAD salvage, and AMPK signaling.

Translation: vinegar is not magic sour water, but it may poke some interesting metabolic buttons under the right conditions.

The Real-World Mess

We also cover why tightly controlled exercise studies can be beautiful in the lab and a flaming raccoon circus in real life.

Direct-to-consumer microbiome testing gets dragged into the daylight too.

Peptides get a skeptical look.

Stress gets its deserved punch in the face, because your gut does not care how perfect your macros are if your nervous system thinks a tiger is chasing you 24/7.

Why This Episode Matters

My favorite part is Emily’s blend of research and coaching.

Researchers who coach communicate better.

Coaches who understand research make better decisions.

When those worlds collide, clients and athletes get better outcomes instead of guru fog, poop-test horoscopes, and supplement rack theater.

Give this one a listen if you want a smarter look at what the science really says about gut health, training, vinegar, and the messy human machine.

Happy Sunday from MN! June is finally feeling like June — warm days, good energy, and another packed week in the books. The Flex Diet Cert is almost here and the ISSN is just around the corner, so buckle up. Always curious as to what you think, so hit me back. Here's what went down this week: Newsletters: Most Healthcare Is Not About Health: The medical system is built around disease management, not health optimization — and there's a big difference. Here's what actual health looks like. 170%...

The Flex Diet Cert is opening up in about 9 days, but before I have more on that coming up soon, today I want to cover one of the most misunderstood studies / protocol...darn I say ever! The year was 1996. Dr. Izumi Tabata and a collection of research nerds who probably hadn't seen sunlight in weeks published a paper that would spend the next three decades being mangled beyond recognition by every gym chain, fitness app, and Instagram trainer on earth. Tabata, I., Nishimura, K., Kouzaki, M.,...

Most healthcare is not about health. There, I said it. Cue the tiny bureaucratic raccoon in a lab coat throwing ICD-10 codes into a flaming filing cabinet. Most of the system is built around disease. Find it. Name it. Bill for it. Manage it. Repeat until everyone -including the docs and staff, are buried under paperwork, insurance forms, and a waiting room TV playing daytime cooking shows at a volume normally reserved for artillery testing. Health, actual health, often shows up as the weird...
