Weekly Wrap Up July 13, 2025

Happy Sunday! Hope your weekend’s going well.

Your fave nerd took the day off yesterday, packed up Black Sunshine, and made the two-hour drive north to Mille Lacs for some kiteboarding at “The Gathering” kite event.

The wind was light—light enough that I got a solid NEAT workout from hiking 35 minutes back through the water with all my gear when it died off. Haha.

Still managed to log 73 km and snag the #2 spot on the leaderboard.

It was a blast, and, as much as gym training matters, recreation does too. So go play tennis, mountain bike, surf, learn to kiteboard… or as a last resort, try pickleball. Haha.

Here's what went down this week.

Article of the week:

Gym Tune of the Week: Children of the Grave” by Lamb of God

Wow- LOG did an amazing cover of this classic Black Sabbath tune for their very last performance ever recently. This tune is a rally cry straight from the nuclear-era early ’70s, penned by Geezer Butler and sealed with Sabbath’s groundbreaking drop-tuned heaviness.

The lyrics are top notch with great lines like "Show the world that love is still alive, you must be brave.”

Randy and Lamb of God channeled ferocity into this all-time classic. Put it on and crank out PRs.

Side note - the concert “Back to the Beginning” also raised about $190 million for charity that was evenly split between Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Cure Parkinson's, and Acorns Children’s Hospice.

None of the bands that played took a single cent, and all paid for their own way to be there. They also expressed how nervous they were to play for Ozzy and Black Sabbath's last show. Amazing tribute!

Much love and metallic madness,
Dr. Mike

Happy Friday! Huge thanks to everyone that kicked me a reply on my newsletter for coaches and trainers yesterday. See it HERE if you missed it. Today is a bit off topic but it is an important subject so I wanted to kick it out to you all. I recently had the pleasure of joining Dr. Ayla Wolf on The Concussion Recovery Podcast for a deep dive, two-part series on what really happens to the brain and body after a concussion and how to recover smarter. We covered everything from alternative brain...

FREEDOM!(Insert bald eagle screech and the smell of singed leg hair from backyard fireworks gone sideways.) I hope your July 4th was lit—both figuratively and literally—with enough fireworks to alarm the neighborhood HOA and enough cheap beer to make your ancestors weep. Picture it now: sun’s out, thighs out, nut-huggers tight, and Four-Finger Freddy lighting bottle rockets with the one good hand he's got left. Now that we’ve cleansed the soul with grilled meats and questionable decisions,...

Welcome back to the Flex Diet Podcast. In this episode, I’m joined by the legendary Coach Cal Dietz from the University of Minnesota. This was originally a bonus call for the Phasic 2 book, but it was packed with so much gold, I had to bring it to the podcast. We dig into a wide range of performance topics, including everything from the surprising benefits of using water bags in training to how footwear can affect pain and mechanics. Cal and I also discuss strategies for building muscle and...
