Weekly Wrap Up May 24, 2026

Happy Sunday from beautiful MN, where it has been nice and cool at night, making this my favorite time of the year.

Enjoy your Sunday night and tune into the Enhanced Games if you're into sports performance live on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/live/aSy5L2DqDDw?si=9ZS-ZQFgB250TMRB.

I gave my Enhanced Games predictions on IG earlier today:https://www.instagram.com/reel/DYu820APyb2/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Always curious as to what you think, so hit me back.

Here's what went down this week:

Newsletters:

  • Ultra Nerdy: SS-31 peptide: Your mitochondria are not “broken” just because your conditioning sucks, your sleep is trash, and a guy online with frosted tips said a peptide would turn you into a human power plant.
  • My oops is your gainZ: Find out how an unlabeled bottle, an accidental double dose, and a “well this could go badly” moment turned into one of the cleanest, most focused deep-work sessions I’ve had in years.
  • Creatine As A Fat Burner? Easy There, Lab Coat Cowboy: Find out how a fascinating new mouse study on creatine, brown fat, and thermogenesis got twisted into “creatine is a fat burner” and why the actual human data tells a much less sexy, but far more useful, story.

Flex Diet Podcast:

  • Episode 385: Rob Wilson on BJJ Performance Frameworks, Grip Training, Recovery Tech & The Check Engine Light Book

Iron Radio:

Instagram posts of the week:

Gym Tune of the Week: The HU "Yuve Yuve Yu”

The first time I heard this song years ago, my exact reaction was:

“What the F is this?”

Mongolian throat singing…
Monster guitars…
A wall of sound that still somehow felt metal as hell.

I had no clue who these guys were, so naturally I went down the rabbit hole, found more of their music, and immediately loved it.

Fast-forward to this past Wednesday, and the wonderful wifey and I finally got to see them live.

They were amazing.

Huge sound. Killer energy. Completely unique.

Check them out, crank it up, and let the Mongolian metal thunder do its thing.

Much love,
Dr Mike

Creatine got dragged into the fat-loss circus again. This time, the shiny object is a new Nature Communications paper on brown adipose tissue, thermogenesis, and something called the Futile Creatine Cycle (Bunk et al., 2025). Cool paper. Mechanistically spicy. Mouse-cage chaos with a tiny white lab coat and a flamethrower. Then the internet did what the internet does: it stuffed the finding into a cheap suit, handed it a microphone, and screamed: “Creatine is a fat burner!” Slow down,...

A few weeks back I accidentally took twice the recommended dose of a nootropic and had one of the best deep work sessions of my life. Not my proudest moment as a scientist, but a win as an accidental lab rat. The short version: Switch Supplements sent me a pre-production sample of their new formula, OnSwitch. Unlabeled bottle. No scoop. No directions. Just mysterious white powder and the implicit dare of "figure it out, sport." I looked at it, did what any reasonable PhD with a flight to...

In this episode of the Flex Diet Podcast, I sit down with human performance specialist and coach Rob Wilson for a wide-ranging conversation that spans music, coach education, and what it really means to train for performance longevity. We dig into Rob’s new book, The Check Engine Light: Tune In Your Body and Mind to Achieve Performance Longevity, and his work educating coaches through ALTIS and with special operations communities. Rob also shares why jiu-jitsu strength and conditioning still...
