Why the most important lever is the LAST one I teach

I get lots of pooo for this statement, but I stand behind it.

"Stop starting to teach your clients about sleep."

A reasonable person reads that and thinks I've lost my mind.

Sleep is sexy now and the thing every health podcast screams about for three hours between mattress ads?

Stick with me, because this is the single idea that separates a coach with a system from a coach with a pile of facts.

Coaching Leverage™

Here's how I actually rank the interventions based on the idea of Coaching Leverage.

Coach Leverage = Physiology X Psychology

One: physiology. How powerful is this lever in the body?

Two: ability to change (aka psychology). How likely is a real client, with a real life, to actually do it?

Multiply them. That product is the Coaching Leverage™ score, and it's literally how the 8 interventions got their order in the cert.

Now watch protein and sleep go head to head.

Protein

Physiology = 9 out of 10. Big lever — satiety, muscle retention, the thermic cost of digesting it, the works.

Ability to change: =9. You're telling a client they get to eat more of something and lose fat. That's the easiest yes in coaching.

Coaching Leverage = 9 × 9 = 81.

Sleep

Physiology = 10. Higher than protein. Sleep is the closest thing we have to a master regulator — recovery, hormones, hunger, insulin sensitivity, all of it. On pure physiology, sleep wins.

Ability to change =2. And here's the rake everyone steps on.

If a client only spends 6 hours in bed, you can "optimize" their sleep hygiene with blackout curtains and magnesium all you want — at some point they simply need more time in bed…

…Which means giving up two hours of Netflix at night. Try telling a stressed hooooman to trade their one decompression ritual for "go to bed." That's not a tweak. That's a knife fight with their entire evening.

Coaching Leverage = 10 × 2 = 20.

81 vs 20

The more physiologically important lever loses the opening slot by a landslide — not because it matters less, but because the client can't move it yet.

That's The Whole Skill

The goal is to rig the system in your clients favor! Start where Coaching Leverage is highest, bank the early win, earn the buy-in, and then climb toward the heavy, hard-to-move stuff like sleep once they trust the process and have momentum.

Protein first. Sleep last. Not a guess — a calculation.

No textbook teaches this and I have not seen any other cert teaches this either. I sure didn't know it when my first clients handed me my glute max on a rusty platter back in 2004, because I led with whatever I thought was coolest instead of whatever would actually move.

The Flex Diet Cert is all 8 interventions, ranked this way, with the exact steps for each.

You learn the why deep enough to defend it to any keyboard warrior, and the exact action steps that are clear enough to use Monday AM.

Wow, what a crazy 48 hours as the wonderful wifey and I were in NYC to do some recordings with Don Saladino. It was amazing to meet Don in person and we had a great chat for 90 minutes. Super fun to see my friends Gary and Mr Marcos in NYC too. Massive shout out to Gianna and Keiran for letting us crash at their place and so wonderful to see them again too. Here is what went down this week: Newsletters: Why your clients quit (it isn't willpower): The real reason clients disappear isn't lack...

I'll be honest about something here. Bonus stacks make my eye twitch. You know the ones. Forty "free" items duct-taped to an offer until the page looks like a ransom note, every item stamped with a made-up value so the total screams $14,000 for a $200 course. The marketing version of putting a spoiler on a Yugo. It's a tactic that is usually hiding a thin product underneath. Hence, before I tell you what comes with the Flex Diet Cert this week, let me tell you what the cert actually is....

The doors to the Flex Diet Cert are open as of this AM! https://miket.me/fdc …but first, a short story. Back in the stone age of 2004 I started coaching clients on exercise and nutrition, and I figured: how hard could this be? I had an undergrad in natural science. A master's in mechanical engineering studying biomechanics and heat transfer. Two years of graduate physiology. Every free hour buried so deep in PubMed I should have paid rent there. Surely I had this, right? Hahaha. No. Not even...
