Recently I asked for your help making this the best fitness insider newsletter, bar none. So far, 147 of you have completed the survey. Thank you. Seriously. I spent part of the weekend digging through the responses, and a few things jumped out at me that I wanted to share here. You Are Not A Beginner Audience Almost 74% of you have been training for more than five years. Hell ya! A large chunk of you are coaches, trainers, health professionals, or competitive athletes. Most of you already understand that protein is useful and randomly flailing around on a BOSU ball is not advanced programming. Good. That means I can keep descending into the physiology nerd chute hard. You Want Science You Can Actually Use The three most requested areas were:
You also want more on strength, muscle, VO2 max, conditioning, nutrition, and body composition. No shock there. What was more useful was how you want the information delivered. Almost 74% want practical training and nutrition examples, while about 65% want short, actionable tips. You still want the deep science dives, however you want me to land the plane and tell you what to do with the information. Message received. I am on it! I’ll keep the science. I’ll also make the application even clearer: what to try, how much to do, when to adjust it, and how to fit it into real life. Time Is The Recurring Enemy About one-third of you mentioned time, scheduling, work, family, or competing priorities as a major obstacle. In other words, you do not need another perfect program designed for someone who apparently lives beside a squat rack and has no job, family, or laundry. Expect more minimum-effective-dose options, realistic programming examples, and ways to combine strength, cardio, and recovery without requiring a second life. We Are An Experienced Crew With Some Mileage About 86% of respondents are 40 or older, and nearly 59% are 50+. I clock in at 52 years old so I hear ya. That does not mean “easy chair fitness.” It means intelligent training for people who want to stay strong, build muscle, improve aerobic fitness, and remain hard to kill for a very long time. I’ll be adding more material for Masters athletes, including recovery, longevity, bone health, aerobic programming, and adjusting training as your mileage goes up. There is also strong interest in custom aerobic training blocks: about 77% are at least somewhat interested. I’m looking closely at what that could involve rather than throwing together another generic zone 2 PDF and releasing it into the internet swamp. Thank You / Last Chance If you completed the survey already, thank you again. Your answers are directly shaping what comes next. If you have not completed it, I’d still love your input. It takes about 2–3 minutes, and you’ll get my unreleased, extended 3-part talk on wearable technology when you finish. This is the last time I will pester you on it, so do it now if you have not. Take the quick survey here → Much love, Dr Mike PS—If you already filled it out, you do not need to do it again. Unless you enjoy surveys recreationally, in which case we should probably talk. If you have not, I would love just 2-3 minutes of your time below and you get a massive 3 part talk on Wearable Technology that has never been publicly released. I got served an ad that hit two of my favorite internet-science buttons at once: Soviet sports science and a recovery claim so precise it practically arrived wearing a lab coat: “In 1978 Soviet Sports Scientists discovered muscles rebuild & recover 2.5x faster with slow breathing immediately after your workout.” Well $hit. Anything old and Soviet must be true cuz SuperTraining… Throw in a grainy photo of some doooode wrestling a bear between squat sets and we basically have enough proof of...
There’s a claim floating around the cardio universe that if you want to maximize stroke volume, you need to do Zone 2. Grab both of your glutes and hold tight as we are going down the nerd chute hard on this one since I don't believe a darn thing anyone claims about Zone 2 anymore, so I pulled a Full Nelson and spent waaaaay too many hours reviewing all of the data related to stroke volume. Here we go! Zone 2 Magic Ah yes. The magical Zone 2, where mitochondria multiply, fat spontaneously...
