Detox Beyond the Liver: What Actually Matters?

The Phys Flex Cert is still rolling on and more details tomorrow through Monday when it closes down. Check out the details below.

Tonight, I have some great info on a super controversial topic...

Detox!

No, not the epic song by the same name by Hevy Devy of Strapping Young Lad, but actually physiologic detox as I sat down with Dr. Gregory Kelly, N.D., Chief Product Officer at Qualia Life and author of Shape Shift.

Detox is more than a liver story—and it is not a stoooopid juice cleanse.

In the podcast we explore how the body's clearance pathways work together, why mobilizing stored compounds is not the same as eliminating them, and how sleep and the brain's glymphatic system fit into the conversation.

We also talk about cumulative stress, everyday exposures, and making habits easier to follow without turning health into an all-or-nothing project.

Note - we do talk about a new product from Qualia and the product descriptions and health claims are Greg's account, not independent verification or medical advice. The small company-run study he discusses used self-reported symptom questionnaires.

Roscoe spent yesterday chasing the burn like it owed him money, finishing every set folded over his favorite trash can and yelling at me “Science beoootches!” He has it backwards though…. Quick version: “Lactic acid” burning your muscles is a myth that will not die. Brooks (2018), reviewing decades of lactate shuttle research, shows lactate is not metabolic garbage — your body makes it continuously and runs on it as fuel, uses it to build glucose, and sends it as a signal. Da burn is hydrogen...

After the ice bath fiasco this morning, Roscoe pivoted. If cold was the problem, heat must be the answer, and more heat must be the better answer. He is now doing ninety-minute sauna sessions and telling anyone who will listen that he is “maximizing his high-hormone environment.” He is not wrong that heat moves hormones, but is it really having an effect? Leppäluoto and colleagues (1986) baked, er, I mean had volunteers in an 80°C (176 F) Finnish sauna and watched growth hormone jump roughly...

Roscoe the Iron Intern had a big week. He did a cold plunge after every lifting session and dropped the converted garage freezer temperature to a frigid 35 F since 1) he does not pay the electric bill, 2) he went on a YouTube Joe Rogan ice bath binge. He justified this as going more hardcore for “extra adaptation.” I told him, as part of his education, to listen to my Expert Interview in the Phys Flex Cert with Dr Fuchs who has researched CWI and muscle hypertrophy in the lab and now Roscoe...
