Roscoe spent yesterday chasing the burn like it owed him money, finishing every set folded over his favorite trash can and yelling at me He has it backwards though…. Quick version: “Lactic acid” burning your muscles is a myth that will not die. Brooks (2018), reviewing decades of lactate shuttle research, shows lactate is not metabolic garbage — your body makes it continuously and runs on it as fuel, uses it to build glucose, and sends it as a signal. Da burn is hydrogen ions and the chaos of hard work, not lactate eating your legs. So the skill is not suffering harder. It is buffering and clearing the acid load, and using lactate as the fuel it is, in doses you can repeat. Roscoe needs to stop using the burn as his scoreboard. pH is one of four regulators. The Phys Flex Cert is where you train all of them without guessing. The private call ends tonight The fast-action bonus — a private hour with me — expires tonight, Wednesday October 14 at 11:59 PM Pacific. After the ice bath fiasco this morning, Roscoe pivoted. If cold was the problem, heat must be the answer, and more heat must be the better answer. He is now doing ninety-minute sauna sessions and telling anyone who will listen that he is “maximizing his high-hormone environment.” He is not wrong that heat moves hormones, but is it really having an effect? Leppäluoto and colleagues (1986) baked, er, I mean had volunteers in an 80°C (176 F) Finnish sauna and watched growth hormone jump roughly...
Roscoe the Iron Intern had a big week. He did a cold plunge after every lifting session and dropped the converted garage freezer temperature to a frigid 35 F since 1) he does not pay the electric bill, 2) he went on a YouTube Joe Rogan ice bath binge. He justified this as going more hardcore for “extra adaptation.” I told him, as part of his education, to listen to my Expert Interview in the Phys Flex Cert with Dr Fuchs who has researched CWI and muscle hypertrophy in the lab and now Roscoe...
This morning I told you the Phys Flex Cert is open and I am so stoked… …however, I left out the part where I hired a brand new intern and I will tell you why this matters. His name is Roscoe. Official title: Extreme Human Performance Iron Intern. He lifts things he should not, reads half a study, and sprints off to “optimize” before the sentence is done. And yes he is a raccoon. Why a raccoon you ask? Well, they have opposable thumbs which make them handy. He is not technically a hooooman so...
