Nervous System Flexibility for Performance, Recovery & Sanity

In this episode of the Flex Diet Podcast, I sit down with my friend Tracy Holemeyer (Uncontrollably Me, host of the Other Way to See It podcast) to talk about healing and performance through nervous system flexibility, somatics, and self-awareness, especially with how much stress people are carrying right now.

We dig into practical tools like orienting, grounding, the “starfish” drill, pendulation, and Tracy’s “core four” (soft eyes, relaxing the tongue, breath pacing for coherence, and soft knees), plus how posture and unconscious habits can shape mood and behavior.

We also explore the value of community and coaching, how movement and sound (including humming, voo breath, and growling) can help regulate, and we finish with a thoughtful discussion on psychedelics, integration, and why support and discernment matter.

Here's what went down this...

Creatine got dragged into the fat-loss circus again. This time, the shiny object is a new Nature Communications paper on brown adipose tissue, thermogenesis, and something called the Futile Creatine Cycle (Bunk et al., 2025). Cool paper. Mechanistically spicy. Mouse-cage chaos with a tiny white lab coat and a flamethrower. Then the internet did what the internet does: it stuffed the finding into a cheap suit, handed it a microphone, and screamed: “Creatine is a fat burner!” Slow down,...

A few weeks back I accidentally took twice the recommended dose of a nootropic and had one of the best deep work sessions of my life. Not my proudest moment as a scientist, but a win as an accidental lab rat. The short version: Switch Supplements sent me a pre-production sample of their new formula, OnSwitch. Unlabeled bottle. No scoop. No directions. Just mysterious white powder and the implicit dare of "figure it out, sport." I looked at it, did what any reasonable PhD with a flight to...
