I'm walking out the door in a few minutes to go host a metal night here in town, so I'll keep the setup short. My ears are already ringing in anticipation. If you're local and want to come melt your face off with me tonight, details are here. Come say hi. I'll be the one parked near the speaker stack. Now the actual reason I'm writing. A documentary series I helped with, Dark Night of Our Souls, is finally out. You can watch the whole thing, start to finish, for the first time ever. This one has been years in the making. Literally years. Film projects stretch time like taffy, so I'm a little fired up that it's real and you can see it. What it's about The film digs into stress, consciousness, and post-traumatic growth. That last one is the part I can't shut up about. Post-traumatic growth is the idea that people don't just survive the worst chapters of their life. Some come out the other side changed for the better. Not in spite of the wreckage, but because of how they moved through it. Worth saying plainly: not everyone grows, and this research is messier than anything I can measure with a lactate meter. But it happens often enough that ignoring it would be dumb. If you've read this newsletter for any length of time, you know stress is my whole deal. Eustress, distress, hormesis, the dose that builds you versus the dose that buries you. I've spent my career studying how the body takes a stressor and comes back tougher. This documentary takes that same question and points it at the parts of us that never show up on a lab test. Consciousness. Meaning. The dark night itself, and what waits on the far side of it. It's heavier than my usual carbZ-and-cold-plunge fare. I think you'll be glad you sat with it. How to watch The film lives on Gaia. Start a free week trial and watch the entire thing for zero dollars: Full transparency: that link supports Jade, who created the film. Start the trial and keep the membership, and Jade earns a small percentage. Just want the free week to watch and bounce? That works too. Either way, thank you. It's live today. Go watch it. Want a taste first? Here's the trailer. Huge thanks to my friend Jade and everyone else who poured themselves into this. Films like this don't happen without a small crew willing to sit in the hard stuff for a very long time. Questions after you watch? Hit reply. I'd love to hear what lands for you. Much love, heavy riffs, and growth on the far side, Dr. Mike PS — The free trial means the whole film costs you nothing to watch, so there's no reason to sit this one out. It's live today: watch it on Gaia. ________ Mike T Nelson CISSN, CSCS, MSME, PhD Mike T Nelson is a PhD and not a physician or registered dietitian. Tune in then. Meanwhile, the...
It is true that dreams come true, as your truly nerdy recently got loose inside Dave Tate's Table Talk podcast for three unsupervised hours. Let me back up to how deep this fandom runs. I first heard of Dave right after he started EliteFTS. A few years later I worked up the nerve to call the Elite sales line — which, in those days, was a phone that Jim Wendler personally picked up. I proceeded to hold the man hostage for an hour. When the smoke cleared I owned a 2x2 rack, a TX power bar, a...
In this episode of the Flex Diet Podcast, I sit down with Dean Guedo and Jeb Stuart Johnston of Food on the Mind for our yearly "AI in Fitness" check-in. We get into whether creators should disclose their AI use, why deepfaked video is a very different beast than AI-assisted writing, and why so much hard-won fitness expertise never made it onto the internet at all. We also dig into dead internet theory, why LLM writing may have already peaked, and why demanding physical skills may become more...
