Go on to the internet and every GooRoo treats recovery like a cleanup crew: more sleep, more protein, a deload, maybe a walk and a massage gun that sounds like a small construction project. Good stuff. Keep it. If your sleep and nutrition are a dumpster fire, fix those first. ....But there is another question nobody wants to ask: What if the problem isn’t your cleanup crew? What if your system is not resilient enough? Two Sides Of The Recovery Coin I like to think about recovery in two buckets. Bucket 1 = Acute recovery is what you do after the hit. Sleep. Food. Rest. Strategic deloads. All the boring, effective stuff that keeps the wheels attached. Bucket 2 = Intrinsic recovery is the capacity you bring into the session in the first place. How much stress can your system absorb, handle, and bounce back from before it starts sending strongly worded letters to management? Remember that shrinking physiologic buffer we talked about earlier this week? This is where it matters. The same hard session that used to cost you a day now wants three days, two naps, and a formal apology to your creaky knees. Especially for those of us over 40, the answer cannot always be “recover harder.” There are only so many hours you can sleep and so much protein you can eat before the solution becomes a second job that eats up waaaaay too much time. Sometimes you need to build better physiology that is more resilient, not buy sketchy AF stuff in a vial from Peptide Pauly's van. Do This Today If that engine is running like a 1987 lawn mower with a sock stuck in the air filter, your ability to recover between hard efforts may be limited before the massage gun even comes out of the drawer. You do not have to become a runner. You do not have to wear tiny shorts or pretend you enjoy spending Sunday morning on a treadmill. Start with a few SHIT training sessions - Super High Intensity Interval Training. They are covered in detail in the pH pillar of the Phys Flex Cert since it will feel like Beelzebub himself dropped acid in your muscles. That is a useful training signal, not another bill your recovery system has to pay with interest. And it is one way to work on the buffer instead of only cleaning up after the damage. Inside the Physiologic Flexibility Certification, I show you how to select and dose stressors across the four regulators—temperature, pH, fuel, and breathing—without treating every session like a hostage situation. The goal is more physiologic capacity, in doses that actually fit your age, training, and calendar. A more manageable payment plan is available at checkout. >> Phys Flex Certification << Andy O’Brien, a former shift worker in the UK, put it this way: “I purchased the course because I was struggling to recover. The 24-hour shifts were wrecking me — persistent fatigue, my fitness regressing. The Phys Flex Cert gave me usable tools that were easy to implement, explained clearly without the jargon.” Enrollment closes Monday night, October 19, Pacific time, and the certification will not reopen until 2027. The Red Light Therapy masterclass—the six-part series I built for Andy Galpin and Dan Garner, not sold separately—is still included through the close. Much love, Dr Mike P.S. You can sleep your way out of a rough night. But if your buffer keeps getting smaller, extra sleep alone is not the whole answer. In my last newsletter told you why your physiologic buffer zone can shrink with age. A lot of the stress chewing through that buffer are thing you didn’t sign up for it. The economy is a toddler juggling chainsaws. The news is a 24-hour panic buffet. Your inbox has apparently figured out how to reproduce without supervision. And your nervous system is trying to figure out whether that email marked “urgent” is an actual threat or another meeting that could have been a nap. Here’s the nasty...
Remember when a hard training session cost you one day? Now it wants three days, a nap, and partial custody of your hamstrings. Two nasty interval sessions a week 10 years ago? No problem. These days, one session has you negotiating with the stairs like a hostage mediator. Biohacker Bob says, “You’re getting older. Just back off.” Peptide Pauly says he has an “age-reversal” vial in a suspicious cooler behind his van down by the river. Both are missing a BIG chunk of physiology. Aging doesn’t...
The Phys Flex Cert is still rolling on and more details tomorrow through Monday when it closes down. Check out the details below. >> Phys Flex Certification << Tonight, I have some great info on a super controversial topic... Detox! No, not the epic song by the same name by Hevy Devy of Strapping Young Lad, but actually physiologic detox as I sat down with Dr. Gregory Kelly, N.D., Chief Product Officer at Qualia Life and author of Shape Shift. Detox is more than a liver story—and it is not a...
