The world’s a dumpster fire. Choose your stress.

In my last newsletter told you why your physiologic buffer zone can shrink with age.

A lot of the stress chewing through that buffer are thing you didn’t sign up for it.

The economy is a toddler juggling chainsaws.

The news is a 24-hour panic buffet.

Your inbox has apparently figured out how to reproduce without supervision.

And your nervous system is trying to figure out whether that email marked “urgent” is an actual threat or another meeting that could have been a nap.

Here’s the nasty twist: unpredictable, uncontrollable stress can hit especially hard. You can’t always stop it, and you sure as hell can’t schedule it neatly between leg day and dinner.

But you do have one lever: the stressors you choose on purpose.

Not random suffering. Not collecting misery points like you’re chasing a leaderboard nobody wants to win.

A challenge with a purpose. And an exit plan.

Your Physiology Runs On Stress Response

Your body doesn’t adapt because you made life comfortable. It adapts when a challenge sends a signal and you recover well enough to respond.

No challenge, not much reason to adapt.

Too much challenge, and you’re just digging a deeper hole with a more expensive shovel.

Stress is like tequila. The dose matters. A little might make for a good story. Way too much, and you wake up in a ditch asking who stole your pants..er, so they tell me.

The skill isn’t avoiding every hard thing. It’s choosing the dose.

Here’s Your Move

Choose some hard things while you still have your hands on the steering wheel.

Intervals you programmed, with enough quality left to make the last rep count.

Cold you step into voluntarily, and step out of before you become a shivering science experiment.

Heat you use as a signal, not an audition for a survival show. Maybe a strategically placed fast, if it actually fits you.

Those are controlled inputs. Not a guarantee that life stops being ridiculous, but a way to practice responding to challenges you can dose and recover from.

There’s a psychological bonus, too: choosing a challenge can give you back some sense of control. You’re not promising your brain the world will behave.

You’re reminding it: “I still get a vote.”

That is a big part of what the Physiologic Flexibility Certification teaches: how to use the four regulators—temperature, pH, fuel, and breathing—and adjust the dose to the actual person, their age, and their recovery. Not some imaginary superhero living inside a spreadsheet.

There’s also a more manageable payment plan available at checkout.

Two Clocks Are Running

Tonight, Friday, October 16, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific: the 4.5-hour Ask Me Anything audio-series bonus expires.

The world is going to keep being the world. The question is whether you’re deliberately building more capacity to handle your share of it.

Much love and chose hard things,

Dr Mike

P.S. You cannot control the chaos. But you can choose a training stressor that fits your life instead of letting every surprise flatten you. The bonus goes away tonight: >> Phys Flex Certification << AMA bonus ending soon

Remember when a hard training session cost you one day? Now it wants three days, a nap, and partial custody of your hamstrings. Two nasty interval sessions a week 10 years ago? No problem. These days, one session has you negotiating with the stairs like a hostage mediator. Biohacker Bob says, “You’re getting older. Just back off.” Peptide Pauly says he has an “age-reversal” vial in a suspicious cooler behind his van down by the river. Both are missing a BIG chunk of physiology. Aging doesn’t...

The Phys Flex Cert is still rolling on and more details tomorrow through Monday when it closes down. Check out the details below. >> Phys Flex Certification << Tonight, I have some great info on a super controversial topic... Detox! No, not the epic song by the same name by Hevy Devy of Strapping Young Lad, but actually physiologic detox as I sat down with Dr. Gregory Kelly, N.D., Chief Product Officer at Qualia Life and author of Shape Shift. Detox is more than a liver story—and it is not a...

Roscoe spent yesterday chasing the burn like it owed him money, finishing every set folded over his favorite trash can and yelling at me “Science beoootches!” He has it backwards though…. Quick version: “Lactic acid” burning your muscles is a myth that will not die. Brooks (2018), reviewing decades of lactate shuttle research, shows lactate is not metabolic garbage — your body makes it continuously and runs on it as fuel, uses it to build glucose, and sends it as a signal. Da burn is hydrogen...
