Why I built this


I’ve been coaching and researching for over 2 decades now which is long enough to make me 1) old and 2) develop a very specific kind of professional rage.

You probably know the kind.

It shows up when an athlete does almost everything right and still falls apart like a shopping cart with one wheel missing and a raccoon driving it like a stolen rental car.

Food tracked.

Training solid.

Sleep decent enough.

Blood work / labs not terrible.

Wearables humming like a second religion.

Coach paying attention.

...And yet the machine still coughs, sputters, and dies in the same ugly place every darn freaking time.

That pattern is why this cert exists.

Not one client or one weird outlier.

A whole parade of them weirdos.

The same haunted house, different wallpaper.

You’ve probably seen this person too:

They lift hard.

Recover “seriously.”

Take their supplements.

Sometimes they even work with a good coach.

Hell, sometimes that coach was me.

Then session intensity climbs, competition gets nasty, life adds stress, recovery turns inside out, and their body behaves like it made a formal reservation for collapse and intends to honor it right on schedule.

That kind of thing will make a coach question his sanity and add many more grey hairs to my ole head.

Therefore, I did what any obsessive physiology lifting geek would do.

I started reading more research.

Played with different periodization schemes.

Tighter nutrition.

More recovery work.

Bloodwork.

Sleep tracking.

More data.

More knobs.

Tweaked more levers.

And......drum rolll

Same result.

Nothing, nada, zip, zero.

Crap!,

As frustrating as that was, it was a huge clue.

The program was not the problem, nor were the inputs.

The layer underneath all of it — the real regulatory machinery the body defends like a cornered rabbit skunk with a switchblade — had never been trained on purpose.

Temperature? Barely touched.

Buffering capacity? Mostly ignored.

Fuel expansion through lactate and ketones? Left in the basement under a moldy tarp filled with gnawed holes.

Breathing? Everybody obsessed over oxygen while treating CO2 like trash gas.

Their physiology never got tested at the edges before life dragged it there and it folded like cheap Ikea lawn furniture in a hurricane.

That’s the honest reason I built the Phys Flex Cert.

Not because I wanted another course or because the internet was tragically short on credentials and somebody had to step in with one more digital badge and a sales page.

Baw!

I built it because I got tired of watching competent coaches — including me — mislabel the problem and then act surprised when the fix never held.

Coach Scott Umberger said it better than I could:

“Mike doesn't live in a lab wearing a bow tie hypothesizing about what the rest of us are doing in the real world.

He is living it through his own clients and his own training.”

That’s exactly what I built.

Not a textbook or a bunch of shiny information pile for physiology voyeurs who collect acronyms like Pokémon cards form their latest GooRoo they worship at the altar of IG.

I wanted to build a system that solved the issues I was running into my clients first.

..and I knew if I was having issues, many other coaches were running into the same issues too.

The PFC came from watching what breaks, figuring out why, then testing the fix on real humans with real lives, real stress, and very little patience for theoretical nonsense, especially when they were already paying me big money to fix their issues!

That’s also why the people who get the most from it tend to say the same kind of thing.

IFBB Pro Dr. Dani LaMartina— a physical therapist who deals with the weird cases other people can’t untangle — filmed her testimonial four different times because she kept thinking of more to say.

Her summary was perfect:
