Now, you might be scratching your head and wondering how in the hell HRV (that's heart rate variability for the uninitiated) can lead you to the land of gainZ, perpetual PRs, and better body comp?
Well, hold onto your hats because I'm about to unleash my #1 "Secret" for harnessing HRV for just that purpose.
But before we embark on this wild journey, I've got a confession to make...
...I have a particular passion for tracking my clients' stress levels using HRV. Maybe obsession is more accurate. Heck, it was even a big part of my published PhD work back in the day, long before HRV became just another app on your phone.
Now, there's a "secret" I'm about to let you in on, one that doesn't get nearly enough attention, and it's high time we change that.
But first, let's take a step back and see how most folks out there chat about HRV, and then I'll spill the beans on this clandestine technique.
HRV, my friend, is your window into the wild and wooly world of your autonomic nervous system (ANS) and helps you tailor your training accordingly. But here's the kicker – HRV won't tell you the why behind your stressed-out ANS. It's like having a compass without a map.
Here's an example to chew on...
Imagine Timmy Tight-Shorts, our HRV enthusiast, diligently checking his HRV every day. Most days, it's all green, with just a hint of amber (stress) here and there. Life's good.
But then, out of the blue, a red (high stress) day hits. Timmy wisely takes a rest day, gets back to training the next day with all his might, and he's back on track.
Fast forward a week, and guess what? Timmy's back in the red zone, two days in a row. Panic mode engaged and Timmy is having a tantrum.
Now, here's the rub – Timmy didn't change his training much, if at all. If anything, he dialed it back a bit. So what gives?
What our dear Timmy stumbled upon is this: HRV is a champ at telling you that your system's under stress, but it won't serve up the stressor on a silver platter.
Oh no, it's not that kind of party.
Without hunting down that stressor and tackling it head-on, stress is gonna rear its ugly head again, usually at the worst possible moment, ruining your training mojo and sapping your PRs.
Now, here's where the real magic happens – the self-report context indicators. These little gems, found in apps like ithlete, let you peek into what else was going on in your life when stress came a-knockin'.
Maybe it was three nights of shoddy sleep.
Perhaps you went on a three-day bender of Five Guys burgers and completely forgot about it.
Knowing the context when stress is breathing down your neck lets you zero in on the culprit instead of playing a guessing game.
And that, my friends, is the "secret" to unleashing HRV's power in a way that'll leave you awestruck.
So, use HRV itself to gauge your stress levels, and if you notice a downward spiral into the realm of "sympathetic stress," look at the context to pinpoint your target.
And if you're eager to dive deeper into the HRV rabbit hole, minus the soul-sucking 90-minute lecture on mind-boggling math stuff like frequency domains, time domains, and Fast Fourier transforms, check out this link below for my course.
No math needed!

I've been tinkering with HRV and Met Flex, alongside a whole bunch of other geeky stuff, during my Masters in mechanical engineering. Plus, I've been coaching athletes with HRV for the past decade.
But fear not, my course talks your language, and you'll have my personal email on speed dial for all your burning HRV questions.
Much love and testing,
Dr. Mike

Hola from somewhere in the vast, corn-infested wilderness of Kansas! I'm currently 8 hours and 2 energy drinks deep into my annual Fall migration to South Padre Island, Texas. My butt has officially filed a formal complaint with management. I pulled off the interstate to give my backside a temporary pardon, check on client emails, and tell you about something that I think is pretty damn cool. Technology No, not AI taking over the world and turning your toaster into a sentient killing...
The Phys Flex Cert closed a midnight PST and huge thanks to everyone who enrolled. Super stoked for you!! Today I sit down with my longtime friend Bryan Krahn, a personal trainer since 1997, CSCS since 2005, full-time online coach since 2014, fitness writer and author of two books with Men's Health. Will AI replace online coaches, or only the ones who stop being human? Bryan and I get candid about why paying for expertise makes you a better coach, how we each use (and distrust) AI in coaching...
Hola from the Lexus dealer. Black Sunshine, my 2017 GX460, threw a check-engine light. Two hours later, the verdict… ...some furry little bastard had chewed through the wiring. Warranty coverage? HA! Apparently rodent wire buffets are on me. Speaking of unexpected stressors, the Physiologic Flexibility Certification closes TONIGHT at 11:59 PM Pacific. Here's why that matters. Life WILL throw some massive stressors your way. Could be tomorrow. New yeart. Or a tiny electrician with teeth...
